Dictionary Day
I celebrated Dictionary Day in after care on October 16, 2009. For detailed information on how I approached this activity, please see the the blog post on how the activity went: Happy Dictionary Day!
Prep Tips:
- Read the Erin McKean articles linked to in the blog post on word creation.
- Customize the Dictionary Worksheet for your purposes.
- Grab a couple of dictionaries as examples for the kids. I used Richard Scarry’s Storybook Dictionary, a paperback Webster’s Dictionary, and The American Heritage Children’s Dictionary.
- Have fun! Let the kids get kind of crazy with it. The more they’re engaged, the more words they’ll create, and the more they’ll ultimately learn without even knowing it.
Other ideas:
- Take all of the dictionary worksheets, put them in alphabetical order, and create your own little dictionary.
- Write a story using the made-up words.
