What’s even better than a snow day? Going to school when it’s snowing! Now, don’t get me wrong: the commute kind of sucked. But, as soon as the kids started to arrive, the magic was infectious. We needed to take some pictures of the preschoolers for a super secret project, and I decided that it would be brilliant to take the pictures outside. So, we bundled them up, one by one, in their boots and all. They stood in front of a short, snow-laced tree outside the school with a Santa hat on, as the snow fell from the sky. They thought it was about the best thing ever. And you know what? So did I.

10-09-2009 078Sometimes I find that my craziest of days are the ones that are most worth-while. Yesterday would qualify as one of those days.

At the beginning of the summer my dad took a job in Michigan. We moved him to a new house there, and Mom and I have been waiting for two things to happen–Mom to get a job and the house to sell. I moved out of my apartment to take care of the house after Mom moved. We’ve been enjoying our time together, but it is coming to an end. She just accepted a job in Michigan, and yesterday morning I took her to the airport to go prep things in Michigan for her move.

10-09-2009 073This gave us an extra-early start to our day, since I had to get her to the airport, then me to work by 7:45 a.m. But, I was excited. Yesterday was my first field trip! We were taking both preschool classes (three and four-year-olds) to Drumlin Farm to explore and go on a hayride. Oh, what fun we had! Even Miss Val got a little crazy. There were goats, sheep, chicken, horses, pigs, and best of all, baby piglets! Thirteen of them to be exact!

After we fully explored Drumlin Farm, it was back to school. I took my break and ran to quickly see an apartment about a half-hour away from school. I had to ask my questions quickly and get back, because there was another field trip in the afternoon! I got to be the staff representative for a movie field trip. Popcorn and lots of kiddos in a movie theater! What could be more fun?

Then it was back to school to finish up at the after school program so my boss could go home. Even though their weren’t many kids in after care yesterday, the kids were kind of crazy. It was rainy, so we were stuck inside, and we had a lot of energy. So, it was time to pull out the tricycles. The kiddos raced up and down the hallway, and I don’t think I’ve laughed that hard in a while.

Thanks to the rain and a freight train, the parents’ commutes were terrible, and I was there late. But, I didn’t even mind. There’s something about being there at the end of the day when the last two kiddos hear their mom come in and go run to hide. She walks in, clearly having had a very long day, and they jump out and yell, “Surprise, Mommy!” followed by an attack of hugs. Have I mentioned that I love my job? Because I do. Sometimes it takes the craziest of days to remind me just how much I love it.

I work split-shift on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. In the morning I’m with the preschoolers, have a two-and-a-half hour break, then I run the after school program. I have a terrible habit of not getting all of my stuff out of the preschool room before I leave for my break. So, I often have to run in at the end of the day and get the rest of my stuff.

Yesterday I left my bag and computer in the room, so at about 2:45 p.m. I went to get them. The lead teacher and the kiddos were playing parachute games. I sneaked in, grabbed my stuff, and went to sneak back out. Just as I reached the door I heard, “Miss Val, you’re not going to join us?”

Suddenly, my copies and other prep became my last priority. For the next ten minutes, we played, and we played hard. There were lots of giggles, smiles, and screams. I may have had my break, but that was the break that sustained me for the rest of the day.
